Stuff The Bus!

May 11 @ 8:00 am - May 18 @ 5:00 pm

So Kids Don’t Go Hungry This Summer

Many children, who count on free and reduced price lunches during the school months, face a hungry summer when school lets out and families struggle to make up for the extra meals. With that in mind the Juniata County Food Pantry announces its fifth annual Summer Backpack Program. When school ends, students from kindergarten through eighth grade, who reside in Juniata County and who receive free or reduced lunches during the school year, are eligible to receive a free backpack and the groceries to prepare five lunches each week throughout the summer months.

In preparation for this program, the Food Pantry is sponsoring two “Stuff the Bus” events. The first will be held at Schlegel’s Grocery Store in Thompsontown on Saturday, May 11th, from 9 AM – 2 PM. The second event will take place at Weis Market in Mifflintown on Saturday, May 18th, also from 9 AM – 2 PM. The Food Pantry asks the public to help us fight summer hunger by donating single-serve, non-perishable lunch and snack items such as 15 oz cans of pasta meals or ready to heat soup (not concentrated), mac and cheese cups, Ramen noodles, Rice-a-Roni cups, microwave meals, fruit cups, pudding cups, jello cups, snack crackers/cookies, cereal, cereal bars, and jars of peanut butter. Monetary donations are also appreciated.

Volunteers from the Food Pantry will be at each site to collect the donations. In appreciation, donors’ names will be displayed in the Food Pantry vestibule throughout the summer. For more information, contact the Juniata County Food Pantry at 717-436-9718.
