The trial of a Coatesville man who was involved in a fatal crash two years ago began yesterday in Mifflin County. Stuart Bryant was the driver of a Dodge Charger that was involved in a head-on collision on Route 22 at Hoss Drive on January 28th, 2019. The crash claimed the life of 49-year-old Harry Aultz of Lewistown.
A McClure man escaped injury yesterday morning when his vehicle struck a deer in Mifflin County. The accident occurred on Route 522 North near McCormick Lane in Decatur Township. According to State Police, 26-year-old Justin Burton was the driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Burton was unable to avoid the collision when the deer entered the roadway.
Strodes Mills Elementary School is closed today (Wednesday, April 7th), and Thursday (April 8th) due to a second individual testing positive for COVID-19. The tentative plan is to have SMES reopen for in-person instruction on Friday (April 9th). During the closing, teachers will execute a full remote learning plan.
Bridge work begins soon on several area roadways. Four bridges total – one in Mifflin County and three in Juniata County will be repaired. PennDOT says the project includes a bridge spanning a tributary of the Juniata River on Route 103 in Granville Township in Mifflin County. In Juniata County, the Route 3017 (Academia Road) bridge over a tributary of Tuscarora Creek in Beale Township will be repaired beginning April 12th. The other bridges are on Route 75 in Spruce Hill Township, and on Route 3018 (Smokey Hollow Road) near the village of East Waterford in Tuscarora Township. PennDOT anticipates completing work on all four bridges by November.
