Predatory mortgage lenders are targeting America’s veterans through a practice called “loan churning”.  “Churning” is when lenders aggressively make multiple offers by mail and phone to reduce home loan interest rates, then tack on fees and expensive closing costs to the unpaid loan balance.  Predatory lending is any lending practice that imposes unfair or abusive loan terms on a borrower.  By definition, predatory lending benefits the lender and ignores or hinders the borrower’s ability to repay the debt. These lending tactics often try to take advantage of a borrower’s lack of understanding about loans, terms or finances.  The lenders typically target minorities, the poor, the elderly and the less educated. They also prey on people who need immediate cash for emergencies such as paying medical bills, making a home repair or car payment. Over the past several years, predatory lending practices have been prevalent in the area of home mortgages.
