Authorities have released the names of the two people who died in a house fire late last week in Juniata County.  The victims were identified as 66-year-old Patricia Peck and 56-year-old Johnny Skinner, both of Mifflin.  According to State Police, the blaze on Tuscarora Street in Mifflin broke out just after 7:00 am Friday.  The investigation will continue into the cause of death.

 

A weekend accident on the William Penn Highway resulted in charges for two people.  State Police say the operator of a Dodge Stratus fell asleep at the wheel Saturday morning just after 6:00 am in Walker Township, Juniata County.  The vehicle crossed the center line and struck a Dodge Ram.  Neither driver was injured in the crash.  Citations were issued for driving on roadways laned for traffic and operation of a vehicle without official certification of inspection.

 

Two weekend fires are under investigation by the State Police Fire Marshall.  On Saturday, a barn fire in Chambersburg destroyed approximately 600 large bales of hay.  Arson is suspected after a car fire early Sunday morning on Holly Pike in Carlisle.  Anyone with information is asked to contact State Police.

 

United Way of Mifflin-Juniata’s 20th annual Day of Caring will be September 20th, starting with a Kick-Off Breakfast for volunteer teams at 7:00 am. The deadline for volunteer and agency registration closes Friday (August 11th).  The United Way is seeking teams of individuals in Mifflin and Juniata Counties who want to make a difference in their community.  Projects from non-profit human service agencies are also needed.  For more information on the United Way’s Day of Caring, or to register, call 248-9636 or visit www.mjunitedway.org.
