In observance of Donate Life Month during April, PennDOT reminds Pennsylvanians that driver’s license and identification (ID) card holders can help others live a fuller, longer life by registering as an organ donor.   To add the organ donor designation to an existing driver’s license or ID card, visit www.dmv.pa.gov and select the “Donate Life Pennsylvania” icon.  Individuals will receive a designation card that they must carry to affirm organ donor status.  More than 48 percent of current driver’s license and ID card holders in the Commonwealth are registered organ donors – more than 4.77 million Pennsylvanians.  More than 7,500 Pennsylvanians currently await organ transplants.

Penn State researchers hope to further enrich eggs and poultry with omega-3 fatty acids.  Research has shown that the consumption of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids provides many health benefits, including lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease.  Yet, few Americans are consuming enough of the vital nutrient to reap the benefits, a deficiency researchers in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences hope to change by fortifying foods people frequently eat, including eggs and chicken.  Researchers say alpha-linolenic acid is an 18-carbon omega-3 fatty acid found in flaxseed, walnuts, soybeans, nut oils and leafy vegetables. It is one of two essential fatty acids that the human body cannot produce on its own but is vital for cardiovascular, cognitive and immune system health. It also is touted for its anti-inflammatory properties.
