Local Holiday Events


The Juniata County Food Pantry and the Salvation Army of Juniata are working together to bring Christmas to families in Juniata County. All the groceries to make up a Christmas dinner will be distributed at the Juniata County Food Pantry from Saturday, December 2 through Tuesday, December 19. Current customers (2017) of the Juniata County Food Pantry may simply request the Christmas meal when they come for their regular groceries. Families who are not current customers of the Food Pantry may also qualify for a Christmas meal if they meet income guidelines and can provide the following: proof of identity such as Photo ID; and proof of Juniata County residency (current photo ID with Juniata County address or recent piece of mail (utility bill) with name and address. If you are picking up a meal for someone else, you must have a note, signed and dated by the recipient, allowing you to pick up the meal for them, as well as the required proof listed above. All applicants must call the food pantry at 717-436-9718 in advance to make an appointment for the distribution.

If you are already blessed with plenty of food and would like to help us provide holiday meals, we are still seeking the following donations: hams 3-5 pounds, canned fruits, instant potatoes, and dessert mixes. Monetary and gift card donations are also appreciated. A Donation of $20 will provide one complete Christmas meal for a family.

For more information, please contact the Juniata County Food Pantry at 717-436-9718. The Pantry is located at 114 N Main Street Mifflintown. Mailing address is PO Box 44, Mifflintown, 17059. Hours are Tuesdays 9-12 and 1-5 and Saturdays 9-12. Donations of non-perishable items may be left at any time in our vestibule, however, perishable foods must be delivered when the Pantry is open.


Would you like to help less fortunate children in our area experience the joy of Christmas? You can by teaming with Regester Chevrolet in Thompsontown is accepting new, unwrapped toys and games with a goal of reaching over 500 local families!

For every gift you donate, Regester will contribute $5 to Toys for Tots. Please help Regester and Toys for Tots deliver a message of hope this Christmas. Toys for Tots is a US Marine Corps Reserve Program.


Beward Pharmacy will have a drop box for the “Juniata County Salvation Army Toy Drive.” The box will be at the pharmacy all thru the month of November. It is important to note that all toys donated will be for children only in Juniata County.






22: CJEMS CHRISTMAS TREES AND WREATHS SALE : Once again it is that time of year! Central Juniata EMS is hosting their Christmas Trees and Wreaths Sale starting on Wednesday, November 22. Come check them out and call 717-436-5527 for more info.

23: COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING MEAL IN HUNTINGDON: The Community Chapel of Hesston is hosting a delicious Thanksgiving Dinner at the Huntingdon Community Center (located at the corner of Fifth and Mifflin Streets in Huntingdon) and you’re invited! Dinner will be served promptly at noon on Thursday, November 23.

An RSVP would be greatly appreciated, but is not required for attendance. RSVP by calling the Chapel at 814-658-3419. Join the Church for an afternoon of food, fun and fellowship this Thanksgiving!

23: FREE THANKSGIVING MEAL: Beaver Lutheran Church will host its 11th annual free Thanksgiving Day meal on Thursday, November 23 from 11AM to 2PM. Take-outs are available. Delivery and transportation to the church is available to those living in the Western Snyder County area. Reservations are appreciated for larger groups. The church is located on Route 522 between Beaver Springs and Beavertown. Please call 570-658-2001 if you have questions, would like transportation or to make reservations. Office hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9AM to Noon.

23: MCVEYTOWN UMC HOSTS THANKSGIVING DINNER: Come enjoy a meal and fellowship as they give thanks for all God has blessed us with! The McVeytown United Methodist Church is hosting a Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 23. The meal will be served from 11AM to 1PM.

Take-outs will not be available…come and fellowship! RSVP to 717-899-7866. Check the McVeytown United Methodist Facebook page for updates.

23: NEW LIFE CHURCH HOSTS THANKSGIVING MEAL: New Life Church in Burnham will be serving a free Thanksgiving meal on the holiday, Thursday, November 23. The meal, which is open to the community, will be served from 11AM to 2PM. Take-outs will be available. The church is offering deliveries in the Mifflin County area only for shut-ins. Reservations for deliveries and meals must be made by calling 717-242-1481 no later than Monday, November 20.

23: THANKSGIVING DINNER AT GRACE UMC: Grace United Methodist Church will be serving a delicious FREE Thanksgiving Day Dinner from 11:00 – 1:00 at 101 Logan Street, Lewistown. That’s right, a FREE Thanksgiving Day dinner on November 23rd with all the fixings. Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, corn, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce and dessert. Everyone is welcome.

24 & 25: BIG VALLEY AREA CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE @ MAPLE GROVE CHURCH: The Big Valley Area Christmas Open House will take place at the Maple Grove Church in Belleville on Saturday and Sunday, November 24 and 25. The open house will be from 9AM to 3PM in the fellowship hall. There will be Amish quilts, crafts, scarves, purses, printings, face paintings, a Christmas photo booth and more! This event is hosted by Jeri Gallery Photography.

24 & 25: ST JOHNS HOLIDAY GIFT SHOW: The St. John’s Holiday Gift Show will be held on Friday, November 24 and Saturday, November 25 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Belleville. Nineteen local vendors will be selling their hand-crafted and fine art gift items from 9AM to 5PM on Friday and 9AM to 2PM Saturday.

All proceeds from the show benefit the Casey Marthouse Memorial Scholarship Fund that St. John’s offers to families who are in need of financial assistance. Come expecting to find unique gift items that can not be found anywhere else!

25: CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK:  Sponsored by the Richfield Lions Club, Christmas in the Park will take place on November 25 from 8AM to 4PM in Basom Park. Over 100 craft and food vendors will be on site. Santa arrives at noon! Mail a letter to him (no postage necessary) and have your photo taken with the big man.

The Country Store will be filled with craft items, fresh wreaths, quilts and more! They’ll also have their famous waffle whoopie pies and sharp cheese cut right from the wheel!

25: CJEMS CRAFT AND VENDOR SHOW: Central Juniata EMS is having their 2nd Annual Craft and Vendor Show on Saturday, November 25. Come on out and enjoy a day of crafts and different vendors. Some confirmed vendors for the event include: LuLaRoe, Norwex, Usborne Books & More, Pink Zebra, Paparazzi, Scentsy, Thirty-One, Pure Romance, Dolls Boutique, and Origami Owl. There will be a silent auction and something new this year as well.

All vendors are asked to bring an unopened holiday children’s toy to help with the Secret Santa Event to help kids in need. Vendor spots are still open. Anyone interested or if you have any questions, call 717-436-5527 and ask for Jess.

27: HUNTER’S BREAKFAST AT MCVEYTOWN UMC: Come enjoy a meal to keep you warm before you hit the cold woods! The McVeytown United Methodist Church is hosting a Hunter’s Breakfast on Monday, November 27. They will begin serving at 4AM until they run out! The menu includes pancakes, sausage, eggs, toast, homefries, and lots of coffee! They’ll take care of your belly AND your spirit! Check out the Church Facebook Page for updates!

30: ICE FESTIVAL CONCERT: The Lewistown Community Band will perform the Ice Festival Concert on Thursday, November 30 at the Historic Courthouse in the Square in Downtown Lewistown. The performance will start at 7PM. Visit www.lewistowncommunityband.com for more details.


This year’s Festival of Ice will take place on November 30 and December 1 in Downtown Lewistown. This year’s theme is Winter Wonderland. The festival will include: an ice sculpture gallery, hay wagon rides, live nativity, petting zoo, kid’s crafts, vendors, food, local entertainment, and more!

Check out what’s in store for this year’s event:


  • Extending the festival grounds up one block of North Main Street to Third Street. Look for more ice sculptures and new food vendors on this block.
  • High Fashion Christmas Tree display in the Historic Courthouse. A variety of dress forms, including some from the Historical Society will be dressed up in creative and interesting ways.
  • Family Painting Parties by Judy on Friday RSVPs highly recommended but not required.  More info on the event Facebook page.
  • The Big Band Sound swinging Christmas program in the historic courtroom on Friday.


  • The Gift Emporium (aka indoor vendors) will be located in the back of East End Coffee Co., 18 E Market St.
  • FREE kids crafts will be held in the foyer of St. John’s Lutheran Church both evenings. St. John’s is located just 2 blocks north of Monument Square.
  • Santa has moved to KC’s Gifts, Jewelry & Awards (former Wilson’s Jewelry Store).
  • Kids artwork has moved. Belleville Mennonite School art will be on display at The Square Deli & Bakery. Artwork from Mifflin County Christian Academy and Sacred Heart School will be on display in the back of East End Coffee Co.

GET INVOLVED. These are some activities that will take some preparation before you get here-

  • Food collection. Our annual nonperishable food collection for Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard is going on now and through New Years. Drop off all *unexpired* food donations to:

-The Historic Courthouse on Monument Square, Downtown Lewistown,

-South Hills School of Business and Technology, 124 E. Market St., Lewistown

-Brisco’ Coffee House, 309 Electric Ave, Burnham

  • Letters to Santa. The big red mailbox will be outside of the Trolley Car once again to collect those important letters! Bring them with you to the Festival of Ice.
  • Chillin’ 4K. Lace up your running shoes and start training for the Chillin’ 4K. Not up for a run? No problem! The Juniata Valley Striders welcome walkers, too. Come in your wildest Christmas costume and you could win an award for your efforts. Registration at Falkner Technologies, 29 W. Market St., Lewistown.
  • Crazy Parade. Not much prep needed here except you need to get to St. John’s before we step off at The parade route was made with small kids in mind as well as strollers and wheelchairs. We step off at 6pm sharp and walk down Main Street, take two laps around The Square and then continue down to St. Mark’s on Water Street where we will disband. It’s a merry way to kick off the annual Festival of Ice!

2: CHRISTMAS BAZAAR AND BAKE SALE: St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church is hosting a Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale on Saturday, December 2 from 8AM to 1PM. There will be craft items, baked goods, Christmas gifts and more!

Come check out what we have to offer and pick up lunch while you shop! Soup, sandwiches and drinks will be available for eat in or take-out.  The church is located at 8489 Licking Creek Road in Mifflintown.

2: CHRISTMAS GATHERING: COOKIE WALK: East Salem UM Church is hosting the Christmas Gathering a Cookie Walk on Saturday, December 2 from 10AM to 12PM. Attendees can purchase an empty box and fill it with cookies for $8.50. Soups and a variety of sandwiches will be available for take-out. Sandwiches will cost $3 while quarts of soup are $5.50 and pints $2.75.

Proceeds from the event will help support special projects and missions. A special craft and baked goods table will be at the event to with all proceeds benefitting Joyful Quilters.

2: LEWISTOWN CHRISTMAS PARADE:  The Christmas Parade will kick off on Saturday, December 2 at 1PM at Chestnut and Dorcas Streets. Those interested in participating in the parade can obtain an application at the Chamber of Commerce.

2: THE NUTCRACKER BALLOT AT JUNIATA HS: Witness a Christmas classic this festive season! The Nutcracker Ballot will be performed by the Margaret McCann School of Dance on Saturday, December 2. The performance will start at 7PM at Juniata High School. For more information call 717-436-9806.

3: ALTERNATIVE GIFT FAIR 2017: The 2017 Alternative Gift Fair will take place on Sunday, December 3 from 12:30 to 3:30PM at East Kish Presbyterian Church on the corner of Walnut and Church Streets in Reedsville. Lunch will be available for purchase beginning at Noon. Returning this year are lots of activities for children.

7: CHAMBER HOLIDAY GATHERING: The Chamber Holiday Gathering will take place at Brisco’s Coffee House & DP Gifts on Thursday, December 7 from 5:30 to 7:30PM. Let’s celebrate this wonderful holiday season together!

Listen to live music, enjoy great food, coffee and tea. Goodie bags will be given to every guest. The gift shop will be open with Special Chamber Member discounts. 9: LOCUST GROVE ACTIVITY DEPARTMENT’S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: Locust Grove Activity Department’s Annual Christmas Bazaar is on Saturday, December 9 from 8AM to 2PM. The Activity Department will be selling various food items as well as crafts.

14: FESTIVAL OF BASKETS:  A Festival of Baskets will take place on December 14 at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital. Baskets donated by departments and the clinic are up for raffle. Tickets are on sale from 11AM to 1PM Monday through Friday until Thursday, December 14. The location of the raffle is on the 3rd floor outside the Eatery.

Drawing will be held at 1PM. Participants do not need to be present to win. Tickets are $1 per ticket or $5 for 6 tickets. Any questions regarding the raffle can be made by contacting Stephanie Bilger at 717-242-7939.

17: COME SEE SANTA AT CENTRAL JUNIATA EMS! : Santa and a few of his helpers will be at CJEMS on Sunday, December 17 from 3 to 7PM. Come enjoy light refreshments, do a few crafts, and talk to Santa in person. Call 717-436-5527 for more details.
